On July 14th, Anaconda announced a new five-year $50,000 commitment to the Baie Verte regional swim program plus $15,000 for repairs to the pool facility. The commitment was prompted by the overwhelming success of an initiative started last year to provide youth in the region with free swimming lessons.
Prior to the 2015 summer season, average enrollment at the Baie Verte pool was about 40 youth. Last year, due to free lessons offered by Anaconda Mining, registration for swimming lessons grew to 150 participants. This new commitment will provide access to lessons for approximately 180 swimmers.
On July 1st, 1916 at the start of the Battle of the Somme, during the Battle of Beaumont Hamel, brave members of the Newfoundland Regiment were among over 20,000 dead and 35,000 injured on a single day of combat in a battle that would eventually take over 1 million lives. Each year, July 1st is a day of remembrance in Newfoundland and Labrador for those fallen soldiers.
In 2016, to honor the 100th Anniversary of World War One, Anaconda is proud to have provided locally-sourced Newfoundland gold to our partners, the Community Foundation of Newfoundland and The Golden Tulip jewelers for the “We Remember” commemorative lapel pin. Proceeds will go to CFNL’s Maple Leaf Fund, which provides funding to support military veterans and their families in Newfoundland and Labrador.
In January 2016, it was announced that Anaconda Mining would be the presenting sponsor of the Rotary Club of St. John’s Northwest 12th Annual Gala Dinner & Auction in St. John’s, NL that took place on March 12, 2016. The Company made a $50,000 donation to support the Gala beneficiary, Hope Air, a national charitable organization that provides free air transportation for financially burdened Canadians in need of medical treatment unavailable locally.
On behalf of their employees, Anaconda Mining Inc and Guy J Bailey Ltd were proud to pledge $10,000 to provide the children of the Baie Verte Peninsula with FREE swimming lessons in 2015. The program was a great success with 159 participants, a 300% increase from the 2014 swimming season!
